Inside the Podcast Blind Spot: Creators, Seniors, and the Data Advertisers Ignore!
We start with the creator blind spot — the fact that 27% of podcasters don’t listen to other shows in their niche. Some avoid influence on purpose. Others get swallowed by production. Either way, it shapes how they create and how disconnected they can become from the listeners they’re trying to reach.
Who Actually Listens to Podcasts is a five‑part reality check for creators and advertisers who think they already know their audience. Spoiler: most don’t. Then we zoom out to the audiences advertisers keep underestimating. Seniors aren’t fringe; they’re a growth engine with high‑intent listening moments across travel, retail, grocery, wellness, and more. The data proves it, but the industry still plans for a fictional “typical listener.” This series exposes the assumptions holding audio back and spotlights the listeners, creators, and markets that are actually moving it forward.
And in markets like Australia, podcasting isn’t experimental anymore — it’s driving real ad growth, real attention, and real performance.
And here's our first story. Do you actually listen to other shows in your niche? A surprising number of podcasters don't. For some reason, it's intentional. A creative boundary they set so they don't get influenced. But for a lot of people, it's accidental. Life gets busy, production eats up the week, and listening to peers feels optional or even pointless. But here's the reality check. In a recent newsletter poll, 27% of the respondents say they don't listen to adjacent podcasts at all. Zero. The biggest reason why? A fear of accidental plagiarism and not wanting to sound like everyone else. Meanwhile, the other 73% say they listen regular, not to copy but to understand the landscape, shape their instincts, and stay connected to the audience they're serving. It's a split, they say. A lot about how creators think, some avoid the noise, some study the field, and both groups believe they're protecting their voice.
And here we go. The five-part series on who listens to podcasts and why assumptions keep misleading advertisers. Part one. Seniors aren't the edge case. They're a missed opportunity. The new report from AdWiz barometer number eight and sounds profitable shows how their underestimated older listeners really are. Advertisers often treat the 55 plus as fringe, but they say the opposite. In the U.S., 65 plus listeners overindulge, and the average age of listeners is showing strong adoption and real traction. And globally, 55 to 65 plus audience shows up consistently, especially around seasonal shopping, travel, recipes, groceries, and wellness. These are high-intent, high-value moments. Yet older listeners remain untargeted despite their clear presence and consumption data. Advertisers are planning for who they think listens, not who actually does. For brands in travel, retail, home, pharmacy, finance, or food, that's the wake-up call. Seniors aren't a sidelight audience. They're a growth audience.
And here's the final story. Australia's digital audio market just logged another strong year, and podcasting is doing a lot of heavy lifting. The new IAB Australia data shows audience internet advertising grew 6.6%, reaching $252 million. The real momentum is inside podcasting for the quarter ending June 2026. Podcast ad spending hit $29 million, a 13% year-over-year jump. That's meaningful growth driven by high intention, better targeting, and more sophisticated creative. The signal is clear. Australia's audience market is not slowing. It's compounding, and podcasting has moved from experimental to one of the most reliable channels for reach, intent, and measurable performance.
