You're listening to Podcasting by the Numbers. Your daily source for facts and stats from the podcasting industry. Each episode will provide you four key insights and indicators that will help maneuver you through the ever-changing podcasting landscape.
Today is November 4th. I'm Gary Spurgeon, podcasting from Jacksonville, Florida. Do you know the number of podcasts that were dropped in October? It's a pretty staggering number. I'll give you these numbers in just a minute. Today, I'm here with your daily four minutes of stats, tips, insights, and numbers to help you better understand what's happening in the world of podcasting. So let's get into the numbers.
1.5 million is our first number. That's the number of new podcast episodes that were dropped in October. That's a staggering number. When it comes to hosting platforms by episode share, Spotify leads with 29.5%. Spreaker takes second at 18.5%. Buzzsprout wants out third with 10%. Meanwhile, legacy platforms are slipping. Podbean, number four, and Lisbon, number nine, just posted their lowest ever numbers for the fifth straight month. But it's not all decline. Transistor hit a new record high overtaking Lisbon. RSS.com and Simplecast are also surging. The hosting landscape is shifting and fast.
Our next number is an insight. Ever wish you could capture that one brilliant moment from a podcast, the quote, the insight, the mic drop line, and actually do something with it? That's where Podcast Magic comes in. It's a new tool built for both listeners and podcasters. Listeners can grab highlights from any podcast just by taking a screenshot with a timestamp. No app to download, no platform limits. Spotify, Apple Podcasts, wherever you're using it, it works. You send the screenshot to Podcast Magic and boom, you get a transcript and a shareable clip in seconds. For podcasters, those listener highlights become gold. Real-time feedback on what's landing, what's being shared, and what deserves a bigger spotlight. For listeners, it's your personal library of inspiration. For creators, it's more reach, better data, and smarter storytelling. They're currently partnering with a select group of podcasters, indies and networks alike, to help shape the tool and amplified standout clips for their 53K newsletter audience. If you're building a show, this is one to watch.
The next number is 1,000. That's the number of subscribers you need to make money in YouTube. It all starts with YouTube Partner Program AdSense. This is your ticket to monetize your content. So what do you need to qualify? Here's the scoop. You need 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 public watch hours in the past year or 10 million short views in 90 days. Make sure you have no community guideline strikes. You need a valid AdSense account. Agree to YouTube terms. And, of course, you get approval from YouTube after they reviewed your channel. Once you're in, your earnings will depend on your views, but not every view pays the same. Things like your niche, where your audience is located, and how engaged they are affect your CPM, or cost per 1,000 views. The bottom line, YouTube monetization is automatic. It's earned. Build your audience, stay consistent, and you can turn your creativity into income.
Our final number is $1 billion. That's the number that the Oxford Road is calling out a major measurement gap in podcast advertising, and it's holding back over $1 billion in potential spend. In its new report, What Brands Want in 2025, the agency surveyed the biggest advertisers in podcasting to understand what's driving and blocking growth. The verdict? Measurement is the number one barrier. 50% of all brands say limited performance data is capping their spend, and 76% would invest more if YouTube podcast attribution matched audio. With nearly a quarter ready to increase budgets by 50% or more, standardization video attribution alone could unlock $1 billion in additional spend. The findings came from major brand decision makers, including six of the top 10 podcast advertisers, representing 15% of the U.S. podcast spend. Other key signals AI host reads aren't trusted yet. Brands want clear standards. Programmatic growth is accelerating in the year ahead. Ad clutter is becoming a problem, pushing the need for better ad load guidance. No shared definition of podcast is causing confusion across audio, video, and YouTube budgets. And brand safety concerns are rising. If the industry improves measurement, advertisers are ready to scale, says Dan Granger, CEO of Oxford Road.
